Students are required to do a Passion Project each semester. These projects are independent projects in which students can chose a subject to investigate and learn about.
The idea for these projects comes from Google. Google allows its engineers to spend up to 20% of their work time on individual projects that they are interested in. The belief is that these individual projects increase productivity and encourage innovative thinking.
These projects will help the students by giving them real world skills, promoting innovation, allow students to investigate their own interests and passions, and provide students with an opportunity to share their passions with other students.
Students will have time on Wednesday afternoons and during Daily Five to work on the projects. The first project will be due in December, and the second project will be due in May.
Students are expected to keep a journal of the progress that they make on the project. They also are expected to have some sort of product at the end of the project (whether that be a book, PowerPoint, poster, paper, model, artifacts, diorama, etc.) and a works cited page where they tell their sources for their project. Students are also expected to present their project to the class.
The students' projects should answer open-ended questions and should be driven by their individual interests.
